OCTOBER BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Posted 09/10/25

Breast Cancer Awareness Month will focus on raising awareness, promoting early detection, and supporting research efforts to combat breast cancer.

This is an annual campaign held in October to educate the public about breast cancer, promote screening, and raise funds for research.  The month is characterized by various events, campaigns, and activities aimed at increasing awareness and support for those effected by the disease.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month can mean different things to different people.  For some, its a trigger 31 days in the fall of pink-ribbon reminders of a disease that forever changed them.  For others, its a chance to show their support for the more than 2 million women around the world who are diagnosed with the disease each year.

There are programs designed to:

  • support people diagnosed with breast cancer, including those with metastatic breast cancer
  • educate people about breast cancer risk factors
  • encourage women to go for regular breast cancer screening starting at age 40 or earlier, depending on personal breast cancer risk
  • raise money for breast cancer research

Awareness and Funding:  The West Virginia Breast Health Iniative aims to raise awareness and fund breast cancer programs, emphasizing the importance of breast health education and financial assistance for screening.

Public Health Program:  The West Virginia Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program helps low-income, uninsured, or underinsured women gain access to breast and cervical cancer screening services.

Legislation:  Recent legislation aims to eliminate financial barriers to clinically appropriate genetic testing and diagnostic imaging, ensuring individuals have access to critical information regarding their cancer risk and recommended early detection.

Community Events:  The annual Race for the Ribbon in Charleston honors survivors and raises funds for breast cancer awareness and care.  These initiatives reflect West Virginia's commitment to improving breast cancer outcomes and providing support to those affected by the disease.
